EU’s von der Leyen: EU and UK have not bridged differences on fisheries

European Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen was out with additional comments in the last hour and said that Brexit positions remain apart on fundamental issues.

Key quotes:

  • Both sides have not bridged differences on fisheries.
  • Fairness key on the level playing field.
  • This is not to say we would require the UK to follow us every time we raise standards.
  • The UK would remain free to decide, the EU would adjust market access conditions as needed.
  • Anyone who has doubts about the rule of law mechanism can turn to the EU court.
  • We will decide on Sunday whether we have conditions for a Brexit deal or not.

The comments did little to ease market worries about the possibility of a no-deal Brexit or provide any respite to the GBP bulls. In fact, the GBP/USD pair – though has managed to rebound around 40 pips from multi-week lows – maintained its offered tone near the 1.3325 region.
