Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova sign partnership agreements with the EU
FXStreet (Łódź) - The European Union has signed a free trade and political cooperation accord with Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova at the EU Council meeting in Brussels on Friday. The pact will allow the three countries to conduct tariff-free trade freely in all of the EU Member States.
It also entails a greater political cooperation, which means weakening the influence of Russia, which in case of Kiev is especially significant, in the light of its recent conflict with Moscow.
"Over the last months, Ukraine paid the highest possible price to make her European dreams come true," Ukraine President Petro Poroshenko said at the signing ceremony in Brussels.
Meanwhile, European Council President Herman Van Rompuy told the leaders of the three countries that "the EU stands by your side, today more than ever before," and assured that the agreements were not aimed at Russia in any way.
Following the news of the signing however, Russia deputy foreign minister Sergei Ryabkov announced that there would be "grave consequences."
