US consumer confidence unchanged in September (prelim)

The University of Michigan's consumer sentiment index stood unchanged at 89.8 in the first part of September, missing expectations of a rise to 90.8 from August.

Meanwhile, current conditions index dropped to 103.5 from 107.0, while the expectations index rose to 81.1 from 78.7.

“Small and offsetting changes have taken place in the third quarter 2016 surveys: modest gains in the outlook for the national economy have been offset by small declines in income prospects as well as buying plans…Overall, consumers remain reasonably optimistic about their economic prospects," said Richard Curtin, chief economist at the survey.
