US stocks close higher helped by housing data

FXStreet (Córdoba) - US stocks closed with modest gains on Monday as strong housing data helped to offset a disappointing manufacturing reading from the New York region.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 67.78 points, or 0.39%, to 17,545.18. The S&P 500 advanced 10.90 points, or 0.52%, to close higher at 2,102.44. The Nasdaq Composite added 43.46 points, or 0.86%, at 5,091.70.

Wall Street indexes rebounded from early losses as US homebuilder sentiment rose in August to its highest level in nearly a decade, offsetting a negative reading from the manufacturing sector. The Empire State data showed August manufacturing activity in New York fell to -14.92, its weakest in more than 6 years.

Investors focus turns to US CPI figures and minutes of the July FOMC meeting on Wednesday for guidance on the probability of a September rate hike.
