China returns as the top holder of US Treasuries
FXStreet (Mumbai) - China returned as the US’s largest creditor in March as Japan slipped back to No. 2, US government data showed.
China held USD 1.261 trillion in US Treasuries in March, the most since September and up from USD 1.224 trillion seen in February, the Treasury Department data showed. Meanwhile, Japan, which slipped to No. 2, held USD 1.227 trillion, above USD 1.224 trillion in February. Belgium, which in February was the No. 3 holder of US debt, saw its holdings plunge in March by USD 92.5 billion to USD 252.8 billion.
The data also showed the decline in overall foreign central bank holdings of Treasuries accelerated in March. They fell USD 23.69 billion, marking the largest monthly decline since April 2013 when they decreased by USD 23.78 billion.
